A LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code required for the trading and reporting of derivative contracts within the European Economic Area (EEA) in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 648/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 4 July 2012 on over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives, central counterparties, and trade repositories (EMIR).
According to MiFID II and the Market Abuse Regulation (MAR), market participants must obtain a LEI for every issuer whose securities are admitted to trading. All investment firms subject to MiFID II are required to maintain a valid LEI.
