General introduction to US tax
When you invest in U.S. taxable securities, a default withholding tax of 30% is generally applied to income you receive. However, if your country of residence has a double taxation agreement with the United States, you may be able to reduce this rate.

To benefit from the reduced withholding tax, you must complete the appropriate IRS W‑8 form.
- W-8BEN form is for private clients.
- W-8BEN-E form is for corporate clients.
- If you are flow through entity e.g. a bank, broker, partnership etc. please reach out to your RM to ensure correct documentation.
Providing a valid W‑8 form is mandatory for all new clients to meet U.S. tax reporting obligations, regardless of whether the client is claiming reduced withholding tax or has access to U.S. income. For more information on why this is required, please see the “Best Practices” section.

How long are the forms valid?
A W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E form are valid from when they have been approved and registered until the end of third year unless there's a change in circumstances. For example, if a form has been approved and registered on the 20th of January 2026, then it will be valid until the 31st of December 2029. This is applicable only if you apply for treaty benefits. If you do not apply for treaty benefits the W-8 is valid until revoked or if there's a change in circumstances.
Please note
A change in circumstances could be if you move to another country or change your tax country. Saxo must receive a new W-8 within 30 days of these changes.
